Clara H. Jones Summer InstituteThe Clara H. Jones Summer Institute is a structured, six-week intensive program aimed at developing students' fine arts skills while also targeting literacy, math and science proficiency. The Summer Institute is named in honor of acclaimed music teacher Clara H. Jones, who was a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools teacher and provided piano lessons on Charlotte's West Side in her home for decades. First Baptist-West Music & Tutoring AfterSchoolThe First Baptist-West Music & Tutoring Afterschool Program is an academic and fine arts program focused on serving at-risk students in grades K-8th who attend Title I schools. We provide help with homework--even when it's in Spanish--and WiFi, supper and extracurricular activities. Our program is primarily funded through a grant from the NC 21st Century Community Learning Center Program. We also offer the SMART Tutoring Program, a high-intensity tutoring service for students who are at least one grade level below their expected literacy growth. Our middle school students participate in the Career Coaching for Middle School Students Program. Our teachers help students with their homework but parents are still expected to help their children and make sure the homework is turned in to school. For fine arts, our students take weekly lessons in Art, Ballet, Brass, Piano and Violin. We present student performing programs for Christmas and the end of the school year We also provide hot, full suppers cooked on site courtesy of the NC Child and Adult Food Program. Lyrical Pre-K AcademyWe are proud to offer Lyrical Pre-K Academy @ First Baptist Church-West. Why the name "Lyrical?" Because the definition of lyrical is "relating to music, art and literature." And that's what this program is all about. Below you will find some of the most frequently asked questions about our program. OPERATING HOURS & DAYSWe follow the open/close schedule of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, as well as CMS' inclement weather schedule.If CMS is open, we're open. If CMS is closed, we're closed. Instruction is from 9:00am-4pm. Students can be dropped off in the morning 8:30am-9am and picked up 4pm-4:15pm. Before and afterschool also available free of extra charges from 7am-9am and 4pm-6pm. CURRICULUMWe have selected the Curiosity Corner Pre-K Curriculum offered by the Success For All Foundation. OUR STUDENT KINDERGARTEN READY RATE IS 70%! We picked this curriculum because it is a comprehensive early childhood curriculum designed to help children at-risk of school failure. It places a special emphasis on children's language and literacy skills, while also helping children develop the attitudes, skills and knowledge for later school success. The curriculum has weekly thematic units that incorporate literacy, math, social studies, culture, etc., and each day children learn using activities that build on each other. The Curiosity Corner Curriculum includes: A strong focus on oral language and vocabulary development. Opportunities for student interaction and partner work Integration of socio-emotional skills and strategies Strategies to help students thoroughly learn procedures and cooperative learning structures. Integration with Sesame Street videos. ENRICHMENTWe offer fine arts enrichment such as choral lessons, puppet shows, storytime and art projects, in addition to our regular curriculum. Most lessons/presentations are 30 minutes per session. Enrichment also includes daily physical education/play time as well as STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math) activities. NUTRITIONStudents receive a light breakfast (for those attending before school), a hot lunch and an afternoon snack.
